Pigeons

Pigeons live in great numbers in our towns and cities, perching on any flat surface on buildings and bridges but never in trees. Because they are sociable animals, they are often seen in large flocks, feeding by day and roosting by night.

Many racing pigeons join the urban flocks of pigeons and soon easily adapt to their new found freedom and begin breeding with their cousins.

Pigeons cause many problems including:

• Their droppings are unsightly and contain acid that corrodes stonework and damages buildings.
• Droppings and nest material often block guttering and drains.
• Dead pigeons fall into uncovered water tanks and contaminate the water supply.
• Some of the diseases from which pigeons suffer can also affect humans. However, this is only a problem for people whose job brings them into close contact with large numbers of birds or their droppings.

Canada geese

As its name implies the Canada Goose came from North America but it is now common in England on inland water and around the coast. They are large aggressive birds which due to their numbers cause many problems including:

• Damage to crops
• Fouling of public areas, golf courses, parkland, etc
• The noise from (gaggle) from a flock can be disruptive
• Due to their aggressive nature they put pressure on other wildfowl populations

Sparrows

Even the humble sparrow can cause problems and in sufficient numbers it becomes a real pest.

The presence of Sparrows in buildings that bulk store food items is likely to result in hygiene problems and their fouling is a potential health hazard. Sparrows will also cause damage soft fruits.

Starlings

Starlings often gather in large flocks, multiplying the effect of the problems they cause. They will eat seeds, fruit, and insects causing a reduction in yield for commercial growers and a significant loss for gardeners.

Their droppings can carry a fungal respiratory disease making it a health hazard to humans.
